By some small miracle the entire Smith clan arrived from different parts on the same day! Shawn and I left Austin
on Friday morning at 9am, flying to London via Detroit. We arrived in London Saturday morning where we had an 11 hour layover. We picked up
Laurel, then flew to Harare on Air Zimbabwe. Once in Harare, we had a 4 hour layover before arriving in Kariba at
noon on Sunday. A forty hour trip, minus the time change!
In Kariba, we stayed at the Rainbow Hotel, which had a lovely view of the lake and pretty nice rooms (picture on left),
for about $80/night. After a long nap, we spent our first evening at the hotel talking with Trish and John
from The Zambezi Safari and Travel Company , who organized
our canoe trip. They wanted to make sure that we didn't have any questions about the trip.
Kariba is a very small, scattered town that is a very popular vacation spot for Zimbabweans, who come up from Harare to spend
the weekend on the lake. Most of the hotels around Kariba are not within walking distance from the town, so expect
to use a car to get around.
